Redken Product Guide 2020

Ever walk up to a product shelf in the salon and feel completely mystified by what you’re looking at?!?

 What's the difference between this number 7 and that number 7?  Why does this bottle have blue writing and that one has pink?!?

It can be overwhelming and confusing.

I’d love the help you decode all those numbers and different colors so you can make informed choices about your product selections. Once you learn the system it's easy!

How to pick the perfect Redken hair product every time

  1. Get familiar with the Redken product number system

The first thing we should talk about are the numbers. With Redken products we have a numbered system that refers to the level of control. Control is a term that combines hold and shaping ability. So think of water as having zero control. If a product is labeled with a number 4, then it has four times the level of control of water.

Control-Level Numbering

Going further, we break our control number system into groups of mild, medium and maximum.

  • Mild control: Numbers 01-06

  • Medium control: Numbers 07-15

  • Maximum control: Numbers 16-32

Mild Control

So if you're looking for a product that you don't really feel in your hair but still gives a styling benefit choose something from the mild control category. It’ll be labeled with a number 01 through 06.

Kate’s mild control faves: Some of my absolute favorite products that fall in this mild category are Satinwear 04, Rewind 06 and Wind Blown 05.

Medium Control

If you’re looking for your styling product to really manipulate the hair yet still have a natural movement choose something from the medium control category. These will be labeled 07 through 15.

Kate’s medium control faves: Some of my go-to’s from this segment are Iron Shape 11, Align 12 and Aerate 08.

Max Control

Prefer your styler to pack a punch and give you the most shaping ability and staying power? Choose products from the maximum control portfolio. The labels will read 16-32.

Kate’s max control faves: I personally love to use Triple Pure 32, Hot Sets 22, and Stay High 18

2. Learn the Redken product line colors

The next point of consider is the color of the label. The Redken product-lines we’re talking about here all use the signature Redken black base color on their packaging. Each line of product, or category, gives distinct results and is denoted by the accent color on the product label. Typically this accent color shows up as color of the text used on the packaging, most notably the product name and number. Let’s dive in to what these different colors mean in terms of the benefit(s) they provide.

Redken Product Lines by Color

Pink = Heat restyling, Heat protection

  • Restyling ability without adding more product. Just restyle with heat to freshen up/reshape your style the next day.

Green = Volumize

  • These products will help give your hair lift and body.

Blue = Texturize

  • This line gives pieciness and texture to a style.

Purple = Smooth

  • Helps to tame your natural texture and get it to lay down in a smooth lux style.

Gold = Shine

  • Adds shine and light reflection to the surface of your hair.

Peach = Hold

  • Finishing sprays (hairspray) to hold your style… a must to complete and protect any look. (Pictured below)

Above: Redken’s finishing sprays and hairsprays provide lasting hold. Look for them as the products with the peach-colored accent coloring on the label.

Now that we understand the label…. Let’s shop! All of my favorite products are linked throughout the post. If you have any more questions, reach out to your pHd stylist for recommendations or leave a comment below!
