At Home Hair 101: Wash 'n Wear Mens' Hair

Hello again my SHORT hair friends!

Are you looking for a quick WET to DRY short hair style that will have you out of the house in no time at all? GREAT! Well then you have came to the right place!

Sometimes in between hair cuts my hair becomes a little too voluminous when I blow it dry, so I turn to WASH ‘N WEAR hair to reduce the “puffiness” that might result from a blown out style. The thing that I LOVE about this WASH ‘N WEAR style is that once I can tell that my hair is completely air dried, I can run my hands through my hair to break the set and the result is a style that is similar to it being blown out, with much LESS volume!

Step 1: Repeat after me… moisture is key

Styling my hair WET or DRY, I feel like styling always begins in the shower. My recommendation would be to leave as much moisture in your hair as possible to begin so that you can alter the natural way the hair wants to lay. For me, my hair wants to fall forward, and for this style I would like to wear my hair away from my face.

Step 2: Choose your hair product

For this style I am only going to use ONE product to keep it easy for you. If you feel like your hair would benefit from a Leave In Conditioner like Redken’s One United, it will only benefit the health of your hair! My go to product for this style would be Redken Brews Liquid Matte Paste.

Pro Tip:  Don’t know how much product to use? It all depends on your hair’s texture and thickness. Use one of the following quantities of product based on your hair type:

  • Thick/Coarse Hair - Use a quarter size amount of product

  • Medium Thick Hair - Use a nickel size amount of product

  • Fine Hair - Use a dime size amount of product

Step 3: Apply product to hair

Evenly distribute product through the hair until the product disappears. Remove excess product from hands once finished. I LOVE Redken Brews Liquid Matte Paste because the end result is a Matte Finish without the gluey tacky feel that a gel would give you. And for my CURLY HAIR friends, this product will work GREAT for you as well!

Step 4: Comb hair to finish distributing product

Using a wide tooth comb, comb all the hair forward to continue to evenly distribute the product. While combing, if any excess product appears on the comb, just simply rinse your comb off.

Step 5: Apply product in the direction you want your hair to lay

Once the hair is combed forward, begin to comb the hair in which direction you want to wear your hair. To the right if your part is on the left; to the left if you part your hair on the right. Once again, if any excess product appears on your comb, just simply rinse off your comb. Also, if you are one of my friends with curly hair, I wold recommend to put the comb down, and use for your fingers for the best results!

Step 6: Set your hair

Continue to comb hair in the direction you wear your hair until ALL the hairs are tamed and you’re able to “SET” your hair & air dry completely. Your hair shouldn’t take long to air dry. Feeling impatient? Just remember that the thicker the hair, the longer it will take to air dry. Worth it.

Step 7: Air dry hair

Allow the hair to completely dry in the position it was set. Air drying can take up to two hours depending on how much hair you have. By lightly touching you hair while it is “Setting”, you can will be able to tell if the hair is still damp.

Step 8: Comb back with fingers and you’re done!

Run your fingers through your hair, in the direction that you chose when you combed (“set”) your hair in Step 5. Finishing up your air dry style by smoothing with your hands produces a look that is similar to how your hair looks after a salon blow dry. The only difference between the two drying methods is the amount of volume. A salon blow dry gives a voluminous end result that can’t be achieved through air drying.

Tip: You can supplement your style by using pomade after your hair has finished drying.
