At Home Hair 101: Easy Salon Blowout
What better feeling is there than leaving your salon with a smooth bouncy shiny blowout?
None. It’s the best!
I understand that styling your own hair can be challenging. How many of us have tried and given up because we weren't sure how to actually tackle that mop of wet hair… or just flipped our head upside down and hoped for the best?
Over the years I’ve been able to help my clients that sit in my chair with one on one lessons on how to recreate their salon blowout at home. While we are all doing our part to help the world by social distancing we find ourselves with a little extra time at home to practice and try out a new skill!
So I can't be there with you, but I can share some knowledge to help you get the results you want faster.
So I put together this video to share how I blow dry my own hair in the hopes that it’ll help you recreate your style on your own!
The video will give you a step by step instruction and a roadmap to follow.
To make it even simpler, let's highlight what I see as the few main points to set you up for success!
Keys to a salon-quality blowout at home
1. Prep your hair with the right products
I choose a de-tangler to infuse moisture and slip before brushing through my wet hair.
A primer to protect my hair from heat and speed up the blow dry process.
A styling aid to create the effect I want to see.
2. Section your hair with intention
You’ll want to work from the bottom to the top so that the hair you’ve already dried is out of the way.
Divide in three main sections, the nape (bottom), the back and sides, and the top.
Keep your sections of hair small and manageable.
3. Use professional tools
The quality of your blow dryer and brush do matter! So if you’ve had that same Conair for 20 years it may be time to upgrade. Over time the heating element on a blow dryer can go and it will begin to create damage from overheating, or the filter becomes clogged and severely slows down timing.
The type of brush you use is just as important! With round brushes we have the option to use a synthetic bristle thermal, or a natural/boar bristle. These will give different effects because of the difference in tension they create. I prefer a thermal because of the speed. If you’ve got a natural bristle one
HOT TIP I’ve learned is to spray the brush with a shine spray to condition it.
